Cleaning Tile Floors

Keeping your floor tiles spotless helps make your establishment look more hygienic and welcoming. It also reflects on how well-managed an establishment is. In comparison with different types of flooring, tile is low-maintenance. Whether it is porcelain, marble, or even acoustic floor tiles, you don't have to put too much effort to maintain it. All you need to achieve is to keep the floor clean and shining. You can accomplish this with simple warm water, a bit of soap or cleaning product, and a trusty mop or rag.

A tile floor should either be dry cleaned, swept, or vacuumed at least twice or thrice a week to get rid of any gritty debris that can dull the tile floor's appearance. Cleaning floor tiles, either bathroom or kitchen, can be challenging. But, with the right products, it can be a fun and stress-relieving task. Luckily for you, we are here to bring you cleaning tile hacks that will help you maintain a squeaky clean floor.

Cleaning Ceramic or Porcelain Tiles

Ceramic and porcelain tiles are among the most common types of flooring that are easy to maintain. However, it's often hard to see the grime buildup under your feet. With these types of tiles, you can use nearly any kind of cleaner, whether it's all-purpose, dish soap, or simply white vinegar. The good thing about these flooring types is that they are low maintenance, and they won't scratch or lose their shine quickly.

Here's what you need to do:

  • Vacuum or sweep the tiles - Remember to get into the corners where dirt usually piles up when vacuuming or sweeping.

  • Combine your cleaner with warm water- Get a rag or mop and soak it in the solution. Squeeze out excess water until it becomes damp.

  • Run the mop over the floor- When mopping your floor tiles with the solution, make sure you do it with gentle strokes, ensuring that every floor area doesn't get missed, even installations like floor access doors

  • Change the water regularly- As you rinse out the mop or rag, the water will naturally get cloudier. Dump the dirty water and regularly refill to avoid leaving a gray or muddy film on the tile.

  • Clean the grout- Spray the grout of the tiles with a cleaner. Remember to choose a cleaner specifically for grout areas. You can also try mixing up a bleach solution. Let it sit for a couple of minutes, and then rinse until clean.

  • Dry the floor with a clean cloth- If your tile tends to create water spots, you can use a clean cloth to dry it immediately after mopping the area.

Cleaning Linoleum or Vinyl Tile Floors

Linoleum or vinyl floors are cost-friendly alternatives to pricier stone-like ceramic tiles, but the upkeep is necessary. A steam mop may seem like an easy shortcut in cleaning these types of floors, but unfortunately, vinyl and linoleum aren't made to withstand extreme moisture and heat.

  • Vinyl: After sweeping, mop with a cleaning solution, or you can also try using a mixture of water and vinegar. Using abrasive cleaners is not recommended since it can scratch the flooring and diminish its quality.

  • Linoleum: After sweeping the area, clean with a solution specifically for linoleum flooring. You can also try utilizing a mixture of water and borax. You can try applying a coat of wax and buff to maintain the floor's shine every three to six months.

Cleaning Marble or Natural Stone Floors

You can clean marble, granite, or slate tile floors similarly with porcelain and ceramic tiles, but with a few minor differences:

  • When sweeping natural stone tile floors, remember to use a soft-bristled broom, as they scratch much more quickly than ceramic and porcelain.

  • Ensure that you're using the exact type of cleaner for the floor: Slate and marble tiles can't handle any acidic solution, such as vinegar, while granite tile can only tolerate a pH-neutral, mild detergent to avoid discoloration.

Keeping your tiles in good condition can be a fun task with the right materials involved. Always remember to use products manufactured for a specific type of tile flooring. Utilizing unknown products can diminish your tiles' quality, reducing their longevity. You can seek professionals for help and assistance on this matter.
