Common Plumbing Mistakes Everyone Should Avoid

If you own a commercial building, you need to hire technicians and maintenance personnel to take care of the different utilities and systems. Moreover, the people occupying your building will need them to ensure they stay comfortable and won’t have any complaints that could put you out of business.

One system you need to keep an eye out for all the time is your building’s plumbing system. Many commercial buildings perform better when they have a working and maintained plumbing system. However, some building cleaners don’t know how to maintain them properly, leading to severe plumbing issues. Here are several common plumbing mistakes you need to avoid.

  1. Pouring Harsh Chemicals Down the Pipes

When you have clogged drain pipes, the best thing to do is pour drain cleaner. However, most plumbing experts may tell you not to do this as the acid from the drain cleaners can slowly erode and destroy the pipes. The acid helps break down the solid that’s blocking the lines, but it can also cause severe damage to the pipes.

However, you can still use drain cleaners if the clog is too severe, but only as a last resort. If you want to avoid using drain cleaners in the future, it would be best not to throw any solid wastes like food in the drain pipes. Make sure you have a garbage bin where everyone can throw their solid waste and help save your pipes from getting destroyed by using acidic drain cleaners.

  1. Failing to Match Pipes Correctly

You need to hire a professional plumber if you don’t want to mess up your plumbing pipes. In some cases, amateur plumbers tend to match the plumbing pipes incorrectly, which could cause significant problems to your commercial building’s entire plumbing system. If they connect two different metals, it can lead to a process known as “galvanized corrosion.”

It will corrode your pipes faster, which will make you have to spend more in repairing them when the time comes. The corrosion can cause the water pipes to leak and burst, causing water to go into different parts of the building, causing even more extensive damages. You need to look for a highly-skilled plumber to install, replace, or maintain the plumbing pipes to prevent galvanized corrosion from happening. If you have plumbing lines found in your building’s exterior, make sure you provide them convenient access by installing a steel insulated access door.

  1. Fitting Pipes Too Tight

During the pipe installation process, the plumber should not tighten the pipes too much as it can potentially damage the pipe’s thread. The thread holds and connects two separate lines, and damaging it can cause water leakage. Apart from the pipes, your plumber should install the faucets carefully if you don’t want to hurt the faucet’s thread and have the water leak out of it.

  1. Lacking Space Around Toilets and Sinks

In some cases, contractors make several mistakes in installing plumbing fixtures. It would usually lead to toilets and sinks having little or no space around them. The bathroom doors would hit them, which could cause marks and slowly damage them. During the planning phase, your contractors need to ensure there is enough space around the toilets and sinks and strategically place them.
